Janesville rules

How long do I have to clear my sidewalk in Janesville?

12 hours after the end of the winter weather event, under ordinance 34-59. After a complaint the city leaves a door hanger with 24 hours, then clears the walk and bills the owner.

What is the fine for an unshoveled sidewalk?

Up to $100 plus costs under the ordinance, on top of the city's bill if it clears the walk.

Can I push driveway snow into the street?

No. Ordinance 34-343 bans putting snow from a sidewalk, driveway or driveway approach onto a city street or alley. See the street rules.

What happens in a Janesville winter weather emergency?

Every vehicle has to be off city streets until plowing is done, with a $50 ticket and a possible tow. City-owned lots are free during the emergency. See emergency parking.

How fast does the city plow the streets?

Once 2 to 3 inches have fallen, city crews aim to plow every street within 10 to 12 hours after the snow stops, and clear downtown within 48 hours when accumulation warrants.

Contracts and timing

How often does it snow enough to plow in Janesville?

NOAA's 1991-2020 normals average 12.7 days a year with an inch or more of snow at the Janesville station, and 2 days with five inches or more.

Per push or seasonal: which is cheaper?

In an average winter they come out close: $508 to $953 if every inch-plus day were plowed at $40 to $75, against $400 to $900 for a season. The comparison guide runs it.

When should I sign up for the season?

Before routes fill. One Janesville contractor says prices rise 5 to 10 percent in September and route capacity tightens in October.

Who shovels at a rental, landlord or tenant?

Whatever the lease says. If it is silent, a tenant with exclusive use of the yard who mows is probably responsible for snow too. See landlord or tenant.
