Short answer

Clearing snow off a roof costs about $200 to $700, and removing ice dams with steam runs $650 to $2,400 with a national average around $1,200 (Angi, Fixr, Housecall Pro). Raking the lower few feet early is the cheap way to avoid the second bill.

Two different jobs

Roof snow removal is pulling snow off the roof, usually the lower three to six feet above the eaves, with a long roof rake from the ground or by hand from a ladder on low-slope sections. It runs about $200 to $700 for a typical house (Housecall Pro, 2026).

Ice dam removal is opening up the ridge of ice that forms along the eaves. Steam is the method that does not tear shingles; hammers and chisels do. Angi puts most jobs at $650 to $2,400 with an average around $1,200 (Angi), and Fixr at $600 to $1,800 (Fixr).

Why ice dams form here

Heat from the house warms the upper roof, snow melts, the water runs down to the cold overhang and freezes there. The ridge of ice grows, and the next melt pools behind it and works under the shingles. Janesville gets most of its 36.6 inches a year in December, January and February (NOAA normals), with the freeze-thaw swings that build dams. Older one-and-a-half-story houses with finished attics are the classic case.

When to call

  • Water stains on the ceiling or the top of an exterior wall during a thaw.
  • Icicles thick enough to bend the gutter, or ice built up behind the gutter.
  • More than a foot of heavy, wet snow on a low-pitch roof, porch roof or carport.

What it costs, and what lowers it

Raking the lower roof after each big snow is far cheaper than steaming a dam later. The permanent fix is in the attic: air sealing and insulation so the roof deck stays cold. Every price on this site is on the snow removal cost page; the long version is in ice dams and roof snow in Wisconsin.

Common questions

Roof Snow and Ice Dam Removal: questions

How much does ice dam removal cost?

Angi puts most steam ice dam removals at $650 to $2,400, average $1,200; Fixr gives $600 to $1,800. Roof snow clearing alone runs about $200 to $700. See the cost page.

Should I rake snow off my roof?

Raking the lower few feet above the eaves after a heavy snow keeps meltwater from refreezing at the overhang, which is how ice dams start. Do it from the ground with a roof rake, not from a ladder on ice.

Why is steam used for ice dams?

Steam melts a channel through the ice without cutting into the shingles. Chipping with hammers or chisels is what damages roofs.
